Why We Should Shop Small & Local
Did you know? For every $100 you spend at locally owned businesses, $68 will stay in the community*. Lately, I’ve been researching the brands I buy. This is mainly because when we consume, we engage in the economy. Our consumption directly impacts society and shopping small has a significant and positive effect on local communities.
Below are a few of my favorite small businesses throughout the United States:
Apexa Designs
Apexa is a beadweaving artist (taught by her mother!) based in Chicago. She was inspired to get bcak into beading when she saw photos of Ruth Bader Ginsburg dissent collars — they looked just like the necklaces she used to make when she was younger. Her jewelry is inspired by nature, geometry/science and her South Asian heritage. Check out her pieces on Instagram or Etsy.

Nanena Vintage
Nanena Vintage handpicks a collection of vintage womenswear. Her collection totally is a mix of whimsy and cute. Since her pieces are vintage and secondhand, you’re even doing Mother Earth a favor. Worldwide shipping available.

Organic Bath Co.
I first found out about Organic Bath Co. at The Indie Shelf (see below). Their products use simple organic and natural ingredients that nourish your skin. My favorite product is their body butter. It’s a thicker than the typical body butter, so I like to put it on after I shower. My skin just drinks it right up, leaving it super supple and hydrated.

The Indie Shelf
This independent beauty shop is owned by the beautiful Sabeen Zia! The Indie Shelf carries both small and local beauty, home care, jewelry, and baby brands. My favorite things in the shop are the candles and skin care products. So, if you’re in Philadelphia and looking to shop locally and find a local brand there, it’s basically a double win. The Indie Shelf does shipping, local delivery, and in-store shopping.
