Be Selfish

I think everyone struggles internally with the guilt of taking a break. Always feeling as if you want to be one step ahead. Always feeling like you could be doing more. Always feeling like you need to make everyone around you proud. Does this sound like you? Then buckle up and enjoy the ride.

Let’s be honest, we as humans care way too much about what other people are saying or thinking about us. If someone says they don’t care at all, they’re lying. I’m about to tell you something that might shock you. Are you ready? No one cares that much about you because they are too focused on what they want to fix about themselves. We try so hard to please other people and make sure that we are well-liked, that sometimes we lose sight of who we are. We become robots living our lives for other people. Is that a life you want to live in? I didn’t think so. I know it’s easier said than done to focus on yourself and put yourself before others. However, it is a journey worth taking.

The last thing you want to do is look back on your life and realize you missed out on something because you were scared about what others would say or think of you. You want to look back and remember how you wore that dress you loved so much or how you skipped school to binge Netflix because of ~self-care~. You want to feel like you lived your life to the fullest and lived each day for yourself because at the end of the day, the only person you need to make sure is happy is yourself. You have to have your own back. The hard truth is that by doing this, you may lose a few people in the process. But if they don’t want to see you happy, then they weren’t meant to stay in your life anyway. If they’re going to leave, hold the door open for them and let them watch you thrive from a distance.

Now, some of you might be wondering, “How do I start living for myself.” You are SELFISH. If you see something you don’t like, leave. If someone invites you somewhere you don’t like, don’t go. If someone makes you feel like shit, drop them. If you want to call in sick to work because you just need a break from the real world for a second, do it.

Start focusing on the little joys in life. Buy your favorite cereal. Rewatch your favorite show. Stay in bed all day. Listen to the rain while you read your favorite book. Start living for those little things, because those little things keep you sane in this crazy world. This life isn’t meant to live for other people. This life is for you to enjoy and grow. You have to be selfish if you want to live your life to the fullest. So, buy that plane ticket, say no to the plans you’re dreading, buy that expensive top that makes you feel sexy. You have nothing to lose except yourself.
