“Navigating the Social and Cultural Aspects within your Work Place… Are We Friends or NAH?”

“The less I know about other people’s affairs, the happier I am. I’m not interested in caring about people. I once worked with a guy for three years and never learned his name. Best friend I ever had. We still never talk sometimes.” – Ron Swanson, Parks and Recreation

There are five days out of the week that I spend with people who are not my significant other, best friend or family member. These are people that I interact with 40 plus hours daily. They are not anyone I am intimate with or even close too. These people- are my colleagues. We were all recruited and hired to attack and thrash the same goals- deliver an amazing product and program to our youth in the communities that we serve.

Navigating the corporate work space can be tricky, stressful and tedious to those who aren’t put up on game. Below are some tips that I found online via Creative Circle that can make anyone’s transition into a new company smoothly:

• Do Your Research

• Be Observant and Look at Your Surroundings

• Ask Questions

• Start Building Relationships Right Away

• Use Your Experience

While it may appear to be “cool” to chat your life away- be mindful that everyone you interact with is NOT your friend. The office is NOT the place to socialize and talk about your personal affairs. This can be off putting for someone like myself who is extremely extroverted and friendly. I have learned the hard way that everyone you work with, does NOT have your back nor your best interests in mind.  Although I am a person who will literally give you the lunch out of my pail and the pens off of my desk- I also DO NOT play with people like that. It takes ONE time for me not to fool with you if you are conniving and back stabbing. Especially if we are just coworkers. SIS/SIR- we are NOT friends.

As of late, I have met some wonderful people that I consider mentors at my job. Being able to make great connections with certain women (and men) in my organization has been amazing. This network would have never made, had I not chosen to relocate for my current contract. If you are one that is seeking to grow in your work and beyond – here are some simple tip(s): Be social, be observant and learn to communicate well. If your organization offers free courses or classes on something you want to learn- SIGN UP. Educate yourself on everything that is happening in your local sector. I have been to a plethora of conferences, lectures and trips – all because I engage with others and show an active interest in networking and growing in my field.

It is my hope, that although shit happens, you bounce back and continue to be the rock star in your career. Don’t take things too personally in the work place. Be up front with your desires to move up and keep certain details about yourself private.

Much love always.
