Why Being Honest With Yourself Is Necessary
My name is PEY PEY, I am a singer/songwriter who grew up in Perth and now based in Sydney, Australia. I write alternative pop music and have recently released my debut single ‘Honest With You’. My style of writing has always been personal, exposing & raw which is why I’ve decided to delve deeper into the power of honesty and take a look at why it really matters.
Feeling Emotions
Being honest with ourselves requires us to feel. We can go through life distracting ourselves and numbing our various pains but ultimately this is all short term pleasure. It’s important to be honest with yourself and others because in the long term this will create the life you want to live.
Self-Awareness
Self-awareness, for me, is such an attractive quality in a person. If someone is willing to put their ego to rest and admit things most people wouldn’t and realize their own ignorance, I think that is such a huge step in being authentic and genuine.
Peace
Ultimately, honesty creates peace. Most people think the opposite. Most people think that being truthful and honest with other people (or yourself) can be painful or hard. So they continue on, pleasing others, escaping reality and feeling disconnected.
Look, I love indulging in distractions more than the next person, you can count on that, sometimes reality is just loathsome. I think it’s important we have outlets to escape but we need to be honest within ourselves whilst doing so. If you’re picking up that bottle or onto your 4th binge watch of the week or procrastinating or indulging in overeating or whatever it may be for you, as long as you can stop and say to yourself okay, why am I doing this? Why am I really doing this? I know that can be tough but if you figure it out there really is a sense of peace knowing that the action stems from something really simple.
Shameless
One thing I know for sure is shame cannot survive honesty. Shame and guilt thrive off hiding away. The more open and honest you are with yourself and the world makes it more difficult for shame to brew.
Sky’s the Limit
Some of the most important influences in my life, great heroes like David Bowie, Elton John & Lady Gaga, etc have all been fairly outspoken, controversial, opinionated people. What’s interesting about that is not all of them were necessarily confident in themselves and I guess what I’d like to say overall: being honest and truthful doesn’t require you to be this “put together, intellectual, confident, brave, outspoken” kind of person. If anything, we need the stories and the insight from the people who struggle in life. Who has been through some shit. Who aren’t okay, who don’t always feel happy or ironically who don’t always tell the truth. It’s the moment when we can all cut the bullshit and really say how we really feel. Those are moments of true bravery, of true honesty and that’s what can make a lasting difference in the world.
We’re all in this together, and if we could all be a little more honest with ourselves, with the world around us, and with the way our lifestyles affect the future, I think anything is possible.

vocals and 80s synths,” Purple Sneakers
Based in Sydney, Perth singer/songwriter PEY PEY releases a mesmerizing new single ‘Honest With You’, a picture-perfect song that portrays the chaotic nature of emotions which premiered yesterday at Purple Sneakers.
Produced by Adam Xycore, PEY’s second single reveals the artist in a new light, one that is shed by synths. Her sound echoes a conversational lyric-style, attacking and breaking in all the right places. The single sees PEY reconstructing Pop by drawing emotions with every word she sings. Her goal through this single
PEY PEY’s New Single “Honest With You” Is A Beautifully Chaotic Ode To Emotions
was set out to sound like she is “Sitting down with the listener and confessing all.”
The song explores themes of existentialism, yearning, self-awareness, and figuring out your place in the world.
“Some of the lyrics and themes are all over the place, but that’s what happens when humans try to articulate the way they’re feeling, sometimes it’s jumbled up and isn’t always in order. Lyrically, I didn’t want to wrap it in a tight little bow,”
When asked to describe her music PEY states it’s “It’s a mix of Sad-Alt, Trash-Glam and Piano Driven Pop”, which is proof of how unique “Honest With You” is as it was one of the first songs that she didn’t write on the piano.
Born into a family of musicians, PEY taught herself the piano and it was only a matter of time for her to write her first song at the age of eight. She then went on to start her path in the academic world and attended the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and, later on, the National Institute of Dramatic Art. She now comes to us as a complete artist, with a style as unique as it is young. PEY is already carving out her own identity, leaving her the one to watch for 2020.
