You are like really pretty for a black girl

Yes, you read the title correctly. Yes, this is a real line I have heard, and several other women have heard in their life. Recently, PopSugar wrote an article, "4 Things I've Learned From Being Pretty "For a Black Girl": Of course, this caught my eye because I have heard this way too many times in my life.

It's supposed to sound like a compliment, but its real racists and the sickest thing you can say to me or any woman of color. Once a guy tells me that it's a wrap. Can we just be pretty? Why is being pretty for a black girl a shocker?

Another thing I hear is, “what you are you mixed with because you don't have black features." What does that even mean? Do all black people have these stereotype features or hair texture? Outlandish behavior I’ve experienced.

My favorite line Ive heard is, “Yes, your skin is so flawless, especially being a dark skin woman.”

Please stop it. Please, everyone have some respect for us; we are humans too. We don't you say, “oh my goodness you are really pretty for a white girl or boy.” Doesn't that sound tacky and rude? Yup, because it is.

Why are we having this conversation in 2020? Young black girls shouldn't have to hear this or feel some way about their complexion. You are beautiful. Embrace your brown skin all shades of melanin magic.

Just because little Andrew (the cutest white boy in your class) doesn't like you - DOES NOT MEAN you are not beautiful. Don't let anyone make you feel unworthy because of your radiant melanin glow.

I am more than my looks. I am a young black woman who is intelligent and confident. Put some respect on my name and my life. We are #blackgirlmagic
